More than just driving : with Daimler´s newest fuel cell technologies

There`s no question: also with the fuel cell technology, Mercedes-Benz is playing in the Champion League. Millions of test kilometers around the globe with the Mercedes-Benz GLC F-Cell, which was recently presented at the IAA in Frankfurt, are proofof this. However, the innovative and environmentally friendly technology is more than "only" CO2-free mobility. A first look ahead is the announced cooperation with leading tech companies, which will start next year in the pilot Phase.

Daimler has been very familiar with the fuel cell technology in vehicles for many years. The know-how could soon be used for entirely new purposes - namely outside the transport sector. Together with the industry leaders Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Power Innovations (PI) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), fuel cell systems will be used in stationary power supply Systems.

Prof. Dr. Christian Mohrdieck, Fuel Cell Director at Daimler AG and CEO of Daimler's subsidiary Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell GmbH: "The market maturity of automotive fuel cell systems is undisputed today. They are suitable for everyday use and a promising option for the mobility sector. But the potential of hydrogen beyond the automobile is diverse and requires the development of new strategies.

Power supply of data centers with Daimler technology

The first specific application is the sustainable and independent energy supply of data centers. Why data centers? The answer is obvious: Data centers are among the largest consumers of energy - with increasing power requirements. And this must be balanced with a view to reducing CO2 emissions through sustainable, environmentally friendly energy supply.

The high level of reliability, low emission rates, low noise level and the reduced space requirements make fuel cells an ideal choice for that special use in data centers. In combination with its unlimited scalability, low maintenance and cost effectiveness, fuel cells already fulfils the high energy storage requirements of today´s data Center.

Susanne Hahn, Head of Lab1886 Global: "We are proud that Lab1886 initiated the Stationary Fuel Cell project to workwith Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell GmbH, Mercedes-Benz Research and Development North America and selected external partners to develop a prototype and an attractive and innovative business model. The goal is a “round-the—clock” power supply of data centers based on renewable energies.”

And that could be as follows: The basic power requirement of the data center is covered by solar and wind power plants. In situations where the generated solar and wind energy exceeds the needs of the data center, the excess energy can be used via electrolysis to produce hydrogen. The energy is stored instead of a throttling the energy production.

When the power demand of the data center exceeds the generated solar and wind energy, or even in the case of a power failure, the fuel cell systems generate sustainable electricity based on the previously stored hydrogen. The use of automotive fuel cell systems helps to simplify the power generation and supply of data centers and significantly improve the CO2-balance.
