H2 MOBILITY: The Mission is Hydrogen Infrastructure

In the first few years since their introduction, hydrogen stations and hydrogen vehicles have proven their worth as day-to-day mobility solutions. An initial group of automobile OEMsare introducing fuel cell series vehicles onto the market, while others are planning to do so in the next few years. What is essential for a successful introduction of hydrogen as a fuel is a comprehensive hydrogen filling station network – and that is the mission of H2 MOBILITY!

The principal operating company, H2 MOBILITY Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG, was founded in 2014 by the companies Air Liquide, Daimler, Linde, OMV, Shell and TOTAL. Their task was as follows: The fast, efficient development of a hydrogen infrastructure for fuel cell cars with sufficient coverage in Germany.

With the collaboration among Air Liquide, Daimler, Linde, OMV, Shell and TOTAL, six companies from the gas, oil and automobile industries have come together. This strong pool of expertise is speeding up the introduction of national and international standards and ensuring more effective utilization of funding, all the while making a considerable contribution to a future in mobility that is free of CO2.

So as to coordinate this progress as closely as possible with other OEMs, BMW, Honda, Toyota and Volkswagen participate as associate partners. The NOW National Organization for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology advises the group on topics regarding public funding programs and ensures the communication with the federal ministry for transportation and digital infrastructure.

H2 MOBILITY receives funding as part of the National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Innovation Programme (NIP) through the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI), from the European Commission through the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking (FCH 2 JU), from the Hydrogen Mobility Europe (H2ME) project and through the trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T CEF) as part of the Connecting Hydrogen Refuelling Stations (COHRS) project.


Even in the initial expansion phase, which H2 MOBILITY expects to last until 2018, Germany will already possess the world's largest hydrogen filling station network with a total of approximately 100 stations. The operator of these stations is H2 MOBILITY. Up to ten hydrogen filling stations will cover each urban German regions of Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich, the Rhine/Ruhr area and Stuttgart. Additional corridor stations on highways and freeways ensure coverage, even up to the borders with Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark.

In a second expansion phase due to last until late 2023, H2 MOBILITY is planning to put up to 400 hydrogen filling stations into operation. However, the expansion in the second phase is dependent on an increase in the number of fuel cell vehicles.

With the foundation of H2 MOBILITY Deutschland GmbH & Co.KG, for the first time a private company is coordinating, planning, building and operating hydrogen filling stations as a core national initiative. Wherever possible, the hydrogen stations are integrated into existing, conventional filling stations.

At the same time, the design is compact, space-saving and comprised mainly of standardized components for hydrogen storage, compression and filling pumps, and conceived for 700-bar systems. The time required for construction only is a mere four to eight weeks.

In addition, H2 MOBILITY is responsible for network planning and hydrogen sourcing. The objective is to acquire the greatest possible amount of hydrogen from renewable energy sources and to offer this across the whole of Germany.
